Laminitis Grazing Risk Monitoring Service – App for Android and iPhone

This app was mentioned the other day in the discussion forums of the (free) University of Edinburgh Equine Nutrition course I’m doing through Coursera at the moment.

The app checks your location and the local environmental conditions to assess the non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) content of grass at any given time. It currently covers the UK, Ireland, Netherlands, France and Belgium. Further details on the science behind the app are available on the its website: http://www.laminitis-risk.com/about_the_service.php.

In terms of functionality, the app is really straight-forward to use – you just click on it and it brings up a dial showing the current risk for your location. By using your device’s ‘menu’ button (this will vary by device) you can search for locations – it’s not tied in to only display where you are. There is also an “Info” tab with expandable sections on various topics.

It is available from Google Play for Android 2.2 and up and the App Store for iPhone 3GS, 4, 4S, 5, iPod Touch (3rd & 4th gen) and iPad. It does cost £3.99 but if it prevents a bout of laminitis it will save an awful lot more than that in heartache and vets’ bills!
